Summer time has many Mexican species at their Northern most locations whether in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley or Mexico. Plus, butterflies are better during the warmer months. Year around specialties like Green Jay, Great Kisskadee, Tamaulipas Crow, Couch’s Kingbird, Ringed Kingfisher, Belted Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, Plain Chachalaca, Red-crowned Parrot, Green Parakeet, Muscovy Duck, Least Grebe, Red-billed Pigeon, Ferriegenous Pygmy Owl, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Brown Jay, White-tipped Dove, and others. Due to the migrating nature of Spring and Fall birds more advanced birders may well be more familiar with certain back home species.
As you can see, birding or butterflying the Rio Grande Valley is not done in one or even a few days. Depths of coverage and target species determine locations, timing, and amount of travel. Traveling 100 miles in one day is not unusual. North East Mexico also has some of the same challenges. Weather can make a difference, while some locations are prepared for a good birding experience except in an immediate down pour. Butterflies, to be plentiful, need warm, sunny, and damp weather.
